8 things to do in Bora Bora

Bora Bora is a captivating destination known for its breathtaking scenery, luxurious resorts, and vibrant marine life. Here’s how you should spend your time on this beautiful island paradise.

  • Unwind on stunning beaches

Bora Bora boasts some of the most picturesque beaches in the world. You’re in the right place if you simply want to relax on the soft, white sands, soak up the sun, and marvel at the crystal-clear turquoise waters. If you’re staying at a resort, then you’ll have direct access to your own stunning stretch of coastline. Matira Beach is the only public beach in Bora Bora. Its idyllic setting and shallow, calm waters make it a fabulous place for sunbathing and swimming. If you’re adventurous, you can even sign up for kitesurfing classes at Matira Beach! We honestly thought Matira Beach was even more beautiful than the private resort beaches in Bora Bora, so don’t think you’re missing out if you spend your time at Matira Beach. The only difference is that resort staff remove the seaweed from the beach every morning!

  • Drive around Bora Bora island

You can easily hire a car or scooter and drive around Bora Bora in half a day, but if you hire a car for a full day then you afford yourself more time to stop at the many lookout points on the way, enjoy lunch at a beachside shake, and indulge in a short hike or two. Some of the most interesting stops we made included exploring WW2 history of seeing the cannons that the US Army positioned across Bora Bora to defend the island from the Japanese. These cannons also happen to be positioned at the most incredible lookout points!

  • Snorkel and explore vibrant corals

Take the opportunity to explore Bora Bora’s vibrant underwater scenery. The island is surrounded by stunning coral reefs teeming with colorful marine life. Snorkeling or diving tours give you the chance to encounter rays, sharks, and a dazzling array of tropical fish. If you’re staying at a resort like Le Pearl Bora Bora, you can borrow snorkel gear and go snorkelling for free. Many resorts have lagoons with warm, clear waters which are perfect for aquatic adventures.

  • Embark on a scenic sailing cruise

For an unforgettable experience, consider going on a guided boat tour around the island. Discover hidden lagoons, secluded motus (small islets), and scenic viewpoints. You can also opt for a leisurely sunset cruise to witness the breathtaking hues of the Bora Bora sunset. Many cruises will also offer an exquisite lunch or dinner on board!

  • Indulge in overwater bungalow luxury

Bora Bora is renowned for its world-class overwater bungalow resorts. If you can stretch your budget – even just for one night – I’d highly recommend that you treat yourself to a stay in one of these iconic bungalows. You’ll enjoy panoramic ocean views and direct access to the lagoon right from your deck. Many resorts offer spa treatments, private dining experiences, and water-based activities right at your doorstep. An overwater bungalow with the Mt Otemanu view was upwards of USD 1000 a night, but there are more affordable options out there. Stay tuned and subscribe to this blog to find out more!

  • Sample exquisite cuisine

Immerse yourself in the flavors of French Polynesia by trying the local cuisine. Whether it’s at a charming waterfront restaurant, or modest beach style shack eatery, Bora Bora offers a diverse range of dining options. Look beyond the typical western style pizza and steakhouse options and look for locally-owned eateries that offer fresh local seafood, tropical fruits and juices, and dishes infused with indigenous Tahitian flavors. Definitely don’t miss the opportunity to sample the sensational dishes, such as cheesy mushroom risotto infused with a hint of Tahitian vanilla! You’d never imagine such a combination – but it’s truly mind-blowing what the Tahitians have managed to combine with vanilla and coconut!

  • Hit the water

Adrenaline seekers can partake in a variety of water sports, including jet-skiing, parasailing, paddleboarding, and kiteboarding. The island’s calm lagoon and favourable trade winds make it an ideal playground for those seeking aquatic thrills. You can even do an underwater walk and there are diving tours specifically for experienced divers. Check out this list of some of the most thrilling water activities in Bora Bora.

  • Hike to the most marvellous viewpoints

It’s possible to hike part of Bora Bora’s crown jewel, Mt Otemanu. The extinct volcano stands at 727 metres tall and the mountain is home to sacred areas where ancient Polynesian kings are buried. However, it’s widely regarded as a dangerous hike, with even locals having died trying to climb the mountain, so it’s recommended that tourists hire a local guide for a 2.5 hour hike which will take you up the mountain, but not to the summit. A guide will also give you interesting insight into local Polynesian customs and traditions. There’s also Mount Pahia, which is equally stunning and stands at 661 metres above sea level.

The allure of Bora Bora lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the myriad activities it offers. From relaxation to adventure, this South Pacific gem has something to enchant every visitor.

This is for the adventurous globetrotters out there

How I Discovered My Passion for Travel

I consider myself a ‘roambassador’ (an ambassador for roaming the world!)

I’ve been traveling to off-the-beaten-path destinations since I was a child. At just 15 years old, I started working several part-time jobs at home in Melbourne, Australia. This included stacking supermarket shelves and doing the paper rounds so I could save money to go on my first overseas trip to Borneo.

And so began my yearly obsession with scraping together my savings to see as much as I can of our incredible world. In the early years I’d simply fly to whatever backpacking destination I could afford. Over time, I started ticking off countries on my bucket list. People told me I was wasting my money and being irresponsible. (Does anyone else feel like others just don’t get it?)

Then I started working as a content producer and storyteller, which has given me a dream opportunity to earn an income while exploring our beautiful planet. I’m now a freelancer and I have visited every continent except Antarctica, which I have no doubt that’ll happen someday soon!

My experiences have inspired me to start a travel blog so that I can share my tips with others who, like me, want to explore everything that our incredible world has to offer in this short lifetime.

What You’ll Find Here

You’ll find travel hacks, ideas for your next adventure, advice and inspiration. I’ll be sharing hidden gems about places that you never knew existed, which I discovered by accident. I’m also going to share money-saving tips so you can see and do as much as possible on your travels and avoid making the same mistakes!

I also want this to be a place where other ‘roambassadors’ can come together to share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other’s experiences … and hopefully save some money while doing so!

Happy travelling xx
